Club meeting at Myra’s house 12/3/11

This meeting wil be hard to top in the coming years. Todd spared no expense, wasted little time and cooked up some vittles that were AWESOME! Our gracious host, Myra, was once again kind enough to host the meeting at her home and provide the opportunity for tasting throughout the evening in addition to the ones paired with the food. In fact I was so busy eating that I really only concentrated on tasting two whiskies.

Whyte & Whyte Talisker 14 year  (bottled in 1979)  Cork disintegrated when club president  pulled out the top half.

Had a leathery smell right off. Tasted sweet at first, wet. Slightly peppery flavor followed that was warm and almost peppermint.

I think all the food I had eaten at that point put the hurt on my taste buds and sinuses. I will have to try that one again. Yes, I will take one for the club and taste it again at a later date. Thank you Myra!

Aberlour 18 year  Sherry Wood Cask

There was a molasses smell at first with a hint of leather/wood. Leathery on the tongue, warm and sweet. The middle was black licorice (no kidding) very, very slightly. Trailed off sour.

I got a leather flavor in two different whiskies this night. The food may have contributed to this. Also I enjoyed the leathery flavor in both. Gee. Guess I’ll have to try the Aberlour 18 again too.

Yes - almost everything JM says is true as we have tasted many of these together (and the not true part just means I didn't taste or smell it - which happens). He has a very connected palate - connects tastes and smells to other things that you are familiar with. This skill is very useful in getting others to "experience" the drink and maybe try something they might like or avoid things they do not like (i.e. if you do not like how bandaids smell, keep away from Islay whisky). And it helps if you ride bicycles (see Honey Stinger Waffle reference). Keep up the good work JM - maybe one day we'll publish it!
