January Meeting Robert Burns Night  1/25/2014

Thank you Rebecca and Drew for once again hosting a memorable meeting with poetry reading and haggis. Of course Myra's bread pudding, Aly's neeps and tatties,  Todd's  shortbread and assorted goodies were excellent. The Elite decanter, straight from Italy, was a nice touch too.
Most importantly we welcomed two new guests. Hopefully they were not scared away by some risque Robert Burns poetry. In fact Devon won our poetry reading contest and scored the Burns portrait. He is seated here in front of Richard. Thank you Brian for inviting your son in law and also for playing the 'pipes. Always a treat.
Things were kept simple that evening with bottles destined for the living cask sampled and some Glenmorangie and the like shared by Drew. The Scotchy Scotch Scotch glass was a'flurry.
Here is the featured whisky from that evening:
*Burns Malt  17yr    55% ABV     Distilled at Caperdonich - closed
     -smelled sweet vanilla, light dough
     -tasted peppery
     -extremely light
-with water smelled lightly of sweet apples
     -tasted very light peppery oak
     -better with water
This whisky verged on a cask strength at 55% ABV but still drinkable with its lightness. Water opened a floral aroma and dulled the pepper. I thought it might taste sweeter as well but did not. I actually tasted the oak at that point.  Still, adding water made it easier to taste by dulling the alcohol burn(s).

Marmalade? Pineapples?

List of whisky added to our living cask:
     *Bunnahabhain XII  46.3% ABV - 1"
     *Black Bush                  40% ABV   - 2"
     *Glenkinchie  12yr    43% ABV  - 1"
     *Green Spot                  40% ABV - 3/4 bottle
     *Tyrconnell                  40% ABV  - 2/3 bottle

Glenkinchie With Todd 1/3/14

*Glenkinchie 13yr   43% ABV  Double matured, finished in Amontillado cask
-smelled sweet wood and candy cane
-tasted slight sour wood at first
     -moved to burnt apple
-with water still sour - smelled slightly floral
-tasted acidic wood, overpowered other flavors
Definitely not what I expected when tasting a Glenkinchie. I am surprised it was not sweeter knowing that Amontillado casks were used. Water ruined it.
