The "Orphans' Dinner" Tasting
Todd acquired a bottle of Kavalan at Total Wine, a Taiwanese whisky, and a little one of Amrut Fusion in addition to the Palm Ridge Reserve Rye. We tasted those. Here is what I tasted:
*Kavalan Whisky 43% ABV No Age Statement Taiwanese
(bottling date: 10/7/2014)
-smelled cinnamon caramel - maybe some sherry
-tasted immediately sweet on the tongue
-went peppery quickly
-trailed light sweet oak
-with water smelled lightly floral
-tasted peppery oak - no sweet
-trailed oaky
Water got rid of the sweetness.
*Palm Ridge Rye 50% ABV
-smelled cereal grain sweet cinnamon
-smelled almost hot oatmeal with brown sugar
-tasted rye peppery with sweet in the middle
-trailed oak with no bitterness
-with water smelled floral/oatmeal/rye
-tasted light rye bread
-trailed oak/rye with almost a pine wood
I like rye bread! This is the nicest rye whisky I have tasted yet. It is not like others.
*Amrut Fusion 50% ABV
-smelled light sweet floral
-tasted peaty/dry wood
-trailed sour/bitter wood
-with water smelled faintly of peat smoke
-tasted very sour peaty
-finished bitter smoke/wood
-tasted like a piece of wood in my mouth
After a few minutes it turned sour with little flavor other than smoke. Not good.
